Gateway API Kubernetes Cloud Native Security Traffic Management Data Plane Service Mesh

About This Event

A Cloud Native Belgium meetup hosted by Dataroots at their offices in Leuven. The evening is themed around Gateway API, the Kubernetes-native approach to traffic routing that is rapidly replacing the legacy Ingress model. Multiple sessions cover different aspects of Gateway API, service mesh, and traffic management in cloud-native environments.

My Contribution

Presenting "Gateway API in the Enterprise", covering six areas: the path of a packet through north-south traffic flows and where Gateway API slots into the classic edge; where the data plane actually lives (in-cluster proxy versus cloud/appliance, including physical F5 as the data plane); the current landscape of Gateway API implementations and the new AI/MCP gateways; security and multi-tenancy through ReferenceGrant, RBAC, and controller-based namespace selection; TLS and network policy covering terminate versus passthrough and where L3/L4 policy fits around L7; and Gateway API versus service mesh, comparing north-south and east-west traffic with L7 visibility through Cilium/eBPF.
